Japanese Koro — High-Fired Ceramic Censer for Powder and Chips

Traditional heating has not been displaced by electric burners and will not be, because for a meaningful part of this market the ritual is the point. Building an ash bed, setting a charcoal, laying a mica plate — the sequence is the practice, not an obstacle to it. Japanese, Chinese and much of the European market prefer it. It is worth stocking alongside your electric range rather than instead of it.

The engineering requirement is thermal shock resistance. A charcoal under ash puts a concentrated heat source inside a ceramic vessel repeatedly, and glazed earthenware crazes and eventually fails under that cycle. Ours is high-fired stoneware, tested to 50 charcoal cycles with no crazing. The base stays under 60 °C on a trivet during normal use, which matters for the furniture it sits on.

Lid geometry is the specification that looks decorative and is not. Pierce it too openly and the ash bed loses heat and the charcoal dies mid-session; pierce it too tightly and the smoke stalls and the scent never leaves the vessel. We tune the pattern against a draw test — the bed must stay lit through a full 90 minute session with the lid on.

We include a usage card covering ash-bed setup, because most first-session failures are setup errors rather than product faults: bed too shallow, charcoal buried too deep, mica plate seated badly. A card in the box removes the single most common support complaint in this line.
