Hydro-Distilled Oudh Oil — Soaked, Fermented, Traditionally Made

Traditional hydro-distillation begins with a soak — the wood sits in water for one to three weeks, initiating a fermentation that produces the barnyard, animalic, faintly fermented character that defines dehn al oud. The soaked material is then water- or steam-distilled. The heat destroys the lightest volatiles, so the finished oil is almost entirely heart and base with very little top. That is not a defect; it is the profile the Gulf market specifically wants and has wanted for centuries.

Yields are brutal, typically well under 0.1% by weight. That arithmetic rather than any marketing story is the real basis of the price. We record yield per batch alongside soak duration and distillation date, and all three are on the batch record — they carry onto a certificate of analysis when you order one. Soak duration in particular gets treated as a trade secret by many suppliers. We publish it because it is the single variable that most determines what you are going to smell.

On aging: cellaring for two to five years rounds the sharp fermentation edge, integrates the profile and deepens the base, and it genuinely commands a premium. It is also the easiest claim in this industry to make falsely, because nothing about an aged oil is verifiable by inspection. We state the actual distillation date on the CoA. If you are comparing suppliers, ask for the date rather than accepting the adjective.

For Gulf retail we supply the 12 g tola flask with a dab-stick closure as standard, because that is the format the trade expects. Selling excellent oil into that market in a 10 ml dropper bottle is not wrong exactly. But it reads immediately as an outsider product and it costs you credibility at the counter.
