That is added to make the stick burn fast and hot and to keep unit cost down. Remove the charcoal and the burn slows, the material cost per minute rises, and the smoke drops dramatically. That is the entire trade, and it is why low-smoke product costs more.

And the reason is visible in the review data of every marketplace listing in the category: the dominant negative review is not about scent, it is about smoke filling a small apartment or triggering a smoke alarm. Does low smoke mean less scent?
No, but it does mean less immediate intensity. Smoke carries scent volumetrically, so a low-smoke stick fills a room more gradually. Why do these self-extinguish more often than standard sticks?
